ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

TIGS fosters a positive attitude to learning by encouraging students to ask challenging questions, to critically reflect, to develop research skills and efficient learning strategies, and to participate in community service.

Our programmes are designed to encourage top achievement for every individual according to his or her interests. With first class teaching and state-of-the-art facilities, TIGS has a long-standing reputation for excellent examination success.

The Illawarra Grammar School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP) in our Junior School, Kindergarten to Year 6.
The NSW Government curriculum is studied in the Senior School in Years 7 to 10 with the NSW Higher School Certificate Course offered for Year 11 and Year 12.

The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) is recognised as the world’s leading academic programme for schools and its pedagogy and approaches to teaching embrace the latest understanding of how students learn.

CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME

The Illawarra Grammar School’s co-curricular programme provides students with the opportunity to learn valuable lessons beyond what is possible within the confines of a classroom, enhancing their academic achievements and setting them up for success in later life.

The extent and diversity of the programme reflects the School’s objective to deliver a holistic approach to each student’s academic, spiritual, physical, aesthetic, cultural, social and emotional development. Students are encouraged to embrace the opportunities on offer, allowing them to develop their unique gifts and talents to the fullest extent.

The School offers a diverse range of activities including sports, community service, visual and performing arts, academic challenge, language and culture clubs, chess, outdoor education and overseas tours.

STUDY ENGLISH AT TIGS

The Illawarra Grammar School offers English language tuition to high school age international students.

The School’s Centre for English provides a high quality English course to prepare students for the Senior School.

The Centre for English is wholly owned by The Illawarra Grammar School and is located within the TIGS campus giving students full access to all TIGS facilities and support services.

Our high school English preparation course teaches the English and academic skills that students need to be successful in the Senior School at The Illawarra Grammar School.

The course combines intensive English language study with English for specific Australian high school subjects.  Time is allocated to focus on Australian study methods and techniques.

While studying at the Centre for English, students are integrated with TIGS students, participating in activities as part of the academic, cultural, sporting and social life of the School. Where appropriate, students are placed in Mathematics classes in the mainstream. This interaction increases confidence and helps students adapt to life in the School.

The course also includes study in the library, computer and internet skills, project work, self study and educational excursions.
