PASTORAL CARE

PASTORAL CARE

Pastoral Care is central to all that we do at Launceston Grammar and encompassed in our classroom activities, co-curricular, community service and chaplaincy programmes

Our Pastoral Care is based on challenging and inspiring our students to embody the Launceston Grammar Virtues: Wisdom, Gentleness, Love, Sincerity, Justice, Forgiveness, Humility, Thankfulness, Patience, Hope, Joy, Perseverance, Service, Compassion and Kindness.

By helping our students to gain a better understanding of themselves and the world in which they live, they learn to be learners and leaders within their community at a local, national and global level and develop leadership skills to assist them throughout life.

Encouraging a student to believe in and to value his or her own unique abilities is one of the most important lessons of life. Our teachers encourage every student to be confident in their self-worth, to be open to new experiences, to build new friendships, develop individual abilities and explore undeveloped talents.

Our teachers care for our students through positive and supportive daily interactions. A House Tutor has prime responsibility for students within their tutor group and liaises closely with the Head of House and Head of Campus and parents to guide each student throughout the year. In our Grade 7 Transition programme, our Head of Grade 7 works closely with the Head of Senior Campus, our core class teachers and parents. A prime focus is on building strong partnerships between the School and the families through regular communication. We encourage parental involvement in many activities which helps to create a community in which our students, parents and teachers learn and develop together.

Student Leadership Programme

Leadership opportunities occur within the pastoral care system as well as within the wider School. Grade 7 staff provide these opportunities in a number of ways within their normal programme. Houses use other senior students to organise and support teams in Intra School competitions and to liaise with Grade 7 House members. In many cases, these senior students remain mentors as the juniors join their tutor groups in Grade 8. The School arranges training of selected students to become peer mentors.

International Students' Coordinator

The International Students’ Co-ordinator (ISC) is the primary contact person for Launceston Grammar’s international students.  The ISC liaises closely with Boarding House, Pastoral and Academic staff to support international students (and their parents) with their progress and general welfare.  The ISC counsels and assists students in practical and pastoral matters and helps prepare international students for all aspects of our broad school programme. This begins with a general orientation and introduction to the school routine, campus facilities, staff and other students.  Over time the ISC will also facilitate discussions with the Director of Studies and Careers Practitioners regarding the ongoing selection of subjects, and an academic course best suited to each student’s needs.
